Mahogany Bay Isla Roatan

Where is Mahogany Bay?

Mahogany Bay is the cruise ship port owned by Carnival Corporation, located on the island of Roatan in Honduras. Roatan is a popular cruise ship stop in the Western Caribbean. Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania ships dock there. Additionally, Costa Cruises, Thomson Cruises, and P&O Cruises all dock at Mahogany Bay. During strong windy weather the chips dock at The Port of Roatan. It offers more space to anchor and tender guests to shore and is located in the capital of Coxen Hole.

What to do at Mahogany Bay?

There is plenty to do right at the port. There is a man-made beach within walking distance, although there is no real snorkeling out from that beach. There are a few bars and restaurants at the beach, but only one closer to the ships: Fat Tuesdays.

There are all the standard shops at the port, including Diamonds International (or Tanzanite International), Harley Davidson, a pharmacy, and several smaller local gift shops and specialty stalls. There is a zipline canopy tour at the port, as well as an ATV tour.

Transportation

You can take a chair lift from the cruise welcome center to Mahogany Bay beach or walk. The cost is $12 USD for an all day pass. Taxis and car rentals are available if you want to explore other parts of the island. Taxi fares need to be negotiated in advance and tend to be higher for cruise ship passengers. Check the Roatan Guide linked under “Where You’re Docked” for updated info on transportation options from Coxen Hole cruise terminal.

Should I Stay at Mahogany Bay While in Port in Isla Roatan?

If you choose to stay at the port while you’re docked in Roatan, you will find plenty of entertainment. However, you will not actually see the island of Roatan at all. The port is quite isolated so there is nowhere to walk from there to get a better feel for the local culture.

If you want to really see the island, you will have to book a shore excursion, or arrange your own adventure for the day. There are countless opportunities for adventure, with these options being some of our favorites. The drive from Mahogany Bay to the popular areas of West End and West Bay is about 30 minutes, so be sure to account for that in your itinerary.

The Ins and Outs of Mahogany Bay

Once you disembark at Mahogany Bay, you will walk along the pier, through the Dufry Store, and uphill to the main shopping area. There is a local marketplace to the far left, while the chairlift and path to the beach and restaurants are to the far right. Diagonally to the left from the central fountain is a red-roofed building – that is your exit point from the port.

Shops and restaurants in Mahogany Bay

You can find shops and a Fat Tuesday’s restaurant at Mahogany Bay. You can find a supermarket and post office at Coxen Hole.

If you take a shore excursion or arrange for your own taxi transportation through the sanctioned taxi association at the port, you will exit through that building. To meet any other tours or transportation pick-ups, you will exit that building, walk to the left uphill, and at the bottom on the other side you will find all other tour options. These are tour companies or individuals who do not have contracts with the cruise lines, so they are not allowed onto the pier. Most SCUBA divers will be picked up from this area, as well as island tour companies that work with smaller groups.
